![]() It's undeniable that there is much more happening in that scene, and in the context of Batman's character through time, than the memes and jokes recognize - and yes, often the jokes intentionally overstate things for humorous effect, but I've seen the exact same points made in supposedly serious, deeper critical analysis of the film. A singular moment, a revelation that turns a character's understanding and relationships on their head in a split second, is not a new concept, nor is this the first or most extreme example of such a thing in cinema. Suffice to say, there's was always more depth and subtext to the "Martha" moment than the complaints are willing to admit or recognize, and those complaints are still too simplistic and shallow a perception of what is, in fact, a complicated convergence of character arcs and narratives. It confuses and shocks Batman, and then the revelation of what's really being said shifts his perceptions to the point he now sees himself clearly for the first time in years. I won't repeat all of my review and analysis of the entire film since you can read it here and those main points still apply to the Ultimate Edition. I'll understand and respect the sentiment that this isn't a film someone enjoys (taste is taste, preference is preference, and reasonable people can disagree), or that it's not their preferences for how to portray these characters but any claim that it's literally a badly made movie and/or that Snyder literally isn't a good filmmaker is just nonsense. If nothing else, I hope those who spent months bashing Snyder and insisting he can't tell stories and/or that he doesn't develop characters, will remember this was Snyder's original version of the film and there was, in fact, some expectation for a longer theatrical cut than we wound up getting. Well, that process got underway even faster than I expected when the Ultimate Edition got its one-night theatrical release last night and hit Digital-HD hours later. ![]() I told you months ago that I believed Batman v Superman's reputation would improve with hindsight, and that a director's cut would win over a lot of haters. ![]() Now, on with my full review of Batman v Superman: Ultimate Edition! So we'll have to wait and see where things fall when the dust clears, but the inclusion of so much additional footage plus the early positive reaction not only from mainstream viewers but even among critics and bloggers who disliked the theatrical release could help push the Ultimate Edition and theatrical version combined toward the century mark in North American sales. I think that number should be doable, but then again, Avengers: Age of Ultron only took $74 million domestic in hard copy sales. Batman v Superman needs to hit in the neighborhood of $100 million domestic sales if it wants to avoid another round of negative media attention. Worldwide, the total is even higher, obviously. Instead, he strives to represent the inherent goodness of the human spirit, and the capacity of every living thing to do right by their neighbors.Man of Steel took more than $100 million in domestic Blu-ray/DVD sales, a figure that rises toward $200 million when we include Digital-HD and rentals. Though his powers make him god-like next to his human compatriots, Superman's story is not one of greed or conquest. ![]() The last survivor of the doomed planet Krypton, raised in the quiet heartland of Smallville, Kansas, Superman is as much a legend as he is a man: the gold standard of heroism, compassion and responsibility.
